Most foreigners become Polish citizens through recognition by the voivode (province governor). The usual route needs at least three years of continuous residence on a permanent residence permit, an EU long-term resident permit or a right of permanent residence, plus a stable income and legal housing. Shorter periods apply to some groups, such as spouses of Polish citizens. Applicants must officially confirm their Polish at B1 level or higher. There is no official civics knowledge test. Citizenship can also be granted by the President.
