The Peru citizenship test and how naturalisation works
Last reviewed: October 22, 2026 · Checked against the official source linked on this page.
Peru has a naturalisation exam. After you file your application online, the Superintendencia Nacional de Migraciones schedules an in-person evaluación de conocimientos at its head office in Breña, Lima. It has an oral and a written part and covers Spanish reading and comprehension, Peruvian history, geography, the Political Constitution, culture and the rights and duties of citizens. Migraciones has not published the number of questions, a pass mark or a question bank, there is no separate fee, and you can retake the evaluation if you do not pass.
Residence and income (current rules)
Under Ley 26574 and its regulations you need two consecutive years of legal residence in Peru, with absences of no more than 183 days in any year, lawful annual income of at least 10 UIT (about S/ 53,500–55,000 in 2025–2026) declared to SUNAT, a clean criminal record, an INTERPOL certificate and to be at least 18. Spouses of Peruvian citizens qualify after two years of marriage and two years of residence as a “Familiar Residente”.
The new Nationality Law (Ley 32421)
Peru published a new Nationality Law, Ley 32421, in El Peruano on 14–15 August 2025. It raises the general residence requirement to five years, sets four years of marriage for the spouse route, keeps the 10 UIT income rule, lists the exam subjects as history, geography, the Constitution, arts and culture, civic education and current affairs, and caps processing at 18 months. It will apply only from the day after its regulations (Reglamento) are published, which had not happened by late 2026, so the two-year rule above still applies.
Fees, timing and the oath
The Migraciones fee is about S/ 301.50 for naturalisation and S/ 204.40 for the marriage route, paid through Págalo.pe. Decisions typically take six to twelve months. Migraciones issues the Título de Nacionalidad; under the new law naturalisation will be granted by the President on Migraciones’ recommendation. You swear an oath of loyalty at a ceremony and then have 60 days to obtain your DNI.
Dual nationality
Peru allows dual nationality. You are not asked to renounce your original citizenship, and “doble nacionalidad” is itself a recognised route in the law (Article 53 of the Constitution).
Our questions are written in English on the subjects Migraciones lists — the Constitution, history, geography, culture and civic duties — so that you know the material; the real evaluation is in Spanish.
