The Taiwan citizenship test and how naturalisation works
Last reviewed: October 22, 2026 · Checked against the official source linked on this page.
Taiwan has an official naturalisation test. Its full name is the Naturalisation Test of Basic Language Ability and Basic Common Knowledge of the Rights and Obligations of Nationals (歸化測試), set out in standards issued by the Ministry of the Interior and last amended in June 2017. Every question comes from the Ministry’s published question bank, which makes it one of the more predictable citizenship tests in Asia.
Format and pass marks
The test has 20 questions worth 5 points each. You choose between an oral test (questions and answers in Mandarin, Taiwanese, Hakka or an Indigenous language) and a written multiple-choice test in Mandarin; the questions and answer options may be shuffled but are taken only from the official bank. The pass mark depends on your route: 70 out of 100 for general naturalisation under Article 3 of the Nationality Act, 60 for spouses and children of Taiwanese nationals and other special naturalisation under Articles 4 and 5, and 50 for applicants aged 65 or over. The fee is NT$500 per sitting (NT$50 to reissue the score certificate), and you can re-sit at the next session if you fail. Tests are delegated to city and county governments and taken through the household registration office, with written notice sent within two weeks of applying.
Alternatives to the test
You do not need to sit the test if you studied for at least one year at a school in Taiwan, or if you completed government-run courses: 200 hours for general applicants, 72 hours for spouses and children of nationals and for people aged 65 or over, and 100 hours for other special categories.
Residence and other requirements
Article 3 of the Nationality Act requires five consecutive years of legal residence with at least 183 days in each year, the age of majority (18), good conduct with no criminal record, enough property or skills to support yourself, and basic language ability and civic knowledge. Spouses and children of nationals need three years (the financial test is waived for spouses). Since the amendment of 7 May 2024, high-level professionals need only two years and may keep their original nationality; people who have made special contributions need no residence period at all. The naturalisation permit certificate costs NT$1,200 (waived for long-term contributors since 2024).
Dual nationality
People who are Taiwanese by birth may hold another nationality, but foreigners who naturalise must normally renounce their original nationality within one year of approval (Article 9), except high-level professionals and people with special contributions. Naturalised citizens cannot hold certain public offices for ten years (Article 10).
Our questions are written in English on the same content areas as the official bank — the Constitution, government, civic duties, history, geography and daily life — so that you understand the material; study the Ministry’s Chinese question bank for the exact wording.
