Does Latvia have a citizenship test? How naturalisation works
Last reviewed: October 15, 2026 · Checked against the official source linked on this page.
To naturalise in Latvia, applicants generally need to have lived in Latvia for the most recent five years (for non-EU citizens, with a permanent residence permit). They must pass a Latvian language test and then a knowledge test on the basic principles of the Constitution (Satversme), the text of the national anthem, and basic Latvian history and culture. The written version has 18 multiple-choice questions (10 on history and culture, 8 on the Constitution) plus writing out the anthem, and each part must be passed separately. Successful applicants then take an oath of loyalty.
This is a civics practice quiz, not the official test. It covers Latvia’s government, history, geography and national symbols to help you prepare. Always confirm the current format and requirements with the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP).
