Does Guinea have a citizenship test? How naturalisation works

Last reviewed: October 22, 2026 · Checked against the official source linked on this page.

Guinea has no citizenship test. Nationality is governed by the Civil Code of 2019 (Loi L/2019/0035/AN of 4 July 2019). Instead of an exam, applicants go through a character inquiry and must show assimilation into Guinean customs (recorded by the court clerk), good character, good health and means of support. Files are reportedly lodged with the court of first instance where you live and reviewed by the Ministry of Justice, and naturalisation is granted by presidential decree published in the Journal Officiel.

Residence and marriage

Sources disagree on the general residence period under the 2019 Code: some give five years, others ten; the earlier code set five years, reduced to two for people born in Guinea or who had rendered important services. Spouses of Guinean nationals can apply after five years of marriage and three years of residence, or three years of marriage if the couple has a child. Confirm the current period with the Ministry of Justice before applying. Unofficial estimates put the total cost, including legal fees, at GNF 3–8 million and the process at one to three years.

Dual nationality and the 2025 Constitution

Dual nationality is generally not allowed: an adult Guinean who voluntarily acquires a foreign nationality loses Guinean nationality. A new Constitution was approved by referendum on 21 September 2025 with 89.38% of the vote; it sets a seven-year presidential term renewable once and creates a Senate. No change to the nationality rules has been confirmed.
