Does Vietnam have a citizenship test? How naturalisation works
Last reviewed: October 15, 2026 · Checked against the official source linked on this page.
Under the Law on Vietnamese Nationality, foreign nationals can generally apply for naturalisation after living in Vietnam for at least five years. Applicants must have full civil capacity, respect the Constitution and laws of Vietnam, be able to support themselves and know enough Vietnamese to integrate into the community. Amendments that took effect on 1 July 2025 relaxed some rules, including exemptions for people with significant contributions to Vietnam and more flexibility on keeping a foreign nationality with the President’s approval. There is no official written citizenship knowledge test.
