Does Venezuela have a citizenship test? How naturalisation works

Last reviewed: October 15, 2026 · Checked against the official source linked on this page.

Foreign nationals can become Venezuelan by obtaining a carta de naturaleza (naturalisation certificate). The Constitution generally requires ten years of continuous legal residence, reduced to five years for people born in Spain, Portugal, Italy or Latin American and Caribbean countries, and for spouses of Venezuelans. Applications are handled through the national identification and immigration service (SAIME). We have not found an official published format for a citizenship knowledge test.

This is a civics practice quiz, not an official exam. It covers Venezuela’s 1999 Constitution and institutions, its independence history, and its geography, culture and national symbols. Rules and procedures can change, so always confirm current requirements with SAIME and the relevant ministry before applying.

Official citizenship testNo. Venezuela has no published citizenship knowledge test. Naturalisation requirements still apply; see below and the official source.

How to prepare

  1. Learn the two big independence dates: 19 April 1810 and 5 July 1811.

  2. Remember that the 1999 Constitution created five branches of public power, not the usual three.

  3. Study a map showing the Orinoco, Lake Maracaibo, the Andes and the Guiana Highlands.

  4. Gather proof of continuous legal residence early, as residence periods are central to a naturalisation application.
