Does South Sudan have a citizenship test? How naturalisation works
Last reviewed: October 22, 2026 · Checked against the official source linked on this page.
South Sudan has no citizenship test. Naturalisation is governed by the Nationality Act 2011, passed at independence. Section 10 requires ten years of continuous residence, no conviction for offences involving dishonesty or other serious crimes, and full mental capacity. There is no knowledge exam and no language requirement in the Act.
Oath, decision and spouses
Naturalisation is granted by the President on the recommendation of the Minister of Interior, and certificates are issued by the Directorate of Nationality, Passports and Immigration. Applicants take the oath in Schedule 1 of the Act, pledging to be faithful to South Sudan and to abide by the Transitional Constitution. Spouses of South Sudanese nationals can apply after five years of living together in the country (section 13), a period the President can waive, and they do not have to give up their previous nationality. Fees and processing times are not set out in the Act.
Dual citizenship
South Sudan has permitted dual citizenship since 2011. No changes to the Nationality Act were found for 2025–2026.
