Does San Marino have a citizenship test? How naturalisation works
Last reviewed: October 15, 2026 · Checked against the official source linked on this page.
Naturalisation in San Marino requires a long period of residence and is governed by the Citizenship Law of 2000, as amended. Reforms in 2026 introduced an Italian language requirement at B1 level and a new written multiple-choice test on San Marino’s history, institutions and values, which must be passed before the application is made. The first sessions had 15 questions, with at least 10 correct answers (two thirds) needed. The 2026 reforms also allow new citizens to keep their original nationality.
This set is a civics practice quiz, not the official test. It covers the Republic’s institutions, its history from its legendary founding, and its geography and symbols. The official test portal provides study notes on history, institutions and values, so always check the Segreteria di Stato per gli Affari Interni for current rules.
