Citizenship of Saint Kitts and Nevis can be acquired by birth, descent, registration or naturalisation. Naturalisation is at the discretion of the Minister responsible for immigration, who looks at a long period of residence, good character and the intention to live in the federation, and approved applicants take an oath of allegiance. There is no published official citizenship knowledge test. The federation also runs a citizenship by investment programme, established in 1984 and often described as the oldest in the world, which is a separate route with its own rules.
