Does Panama have a citizenship test? How naturalisation works
Last reviewed: October 15, 2026 · Checked against the official source linked on this page.
Under Article 10 of Panama’s Constitution, foreign nationals can apply for naturalisation after five consecutive years of residence, or three years if they have a Panamanian child or spouse. Nationals by birth of Spain or a Latin American country can apply on the same terms their country offers Panamanians. Applicants must renounce their previous nationality and prove they speak Spanish and have basic knowledge of Panama’s geography, history and political organisation. Panama has an official knowledge exam, the Electoral Tribunal’s basic knowledge exam, and applications go through a lawyer to the National Migration Service.
This set is a civics practice quiz, not the official exam. It covers Panama’s Constitution and institutions, its history from independence to the Canal handover, and its geography, culture and national symbols. We have not found an official published format for the exam, so confirm details with the Electoral Tribunal and the National Migration Service.
