Does Laos have a citizenship test? How naturalisation works
Last reviewed: October 15, 2026 · Checked against the official source linked on this page.
Under the Law on Lao Nationality, foreign nationals and stateless people aged 18 or over can apply for Lao nationality. The 2004 version of the law required ten years of continuous permanent residence, the ability to speak, read and write Lao fluently, evidence of social and cultural integration, respect for Lao traditions and, for foreign nationals, agreement to give up their previous nationality. Under that law, applications were examined by the Ministry of Justice. The law has since been amended. We have not found any official written citizenship knowledge test.
This civics practice quiz is not an official exam. It covers the government of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, its history from the kingdom of Lan Xang to 1975, and its geography, culture and national symbols. Always confirm current requirements with the Lao authorities or a Lao embassy before applying.
