To naturalise in Japan, you apply in person at the Legal Affairs Bureau for your area, and the Minister of Justice decides the application. The basic conditions include at least five years of continuous lawful residence, being 18 or over, good conduct, the ability to support yourself and giving up other nationalities. The Ministry of Justice says applicants should have enough Japanese to manage daily life. There is no official written civics test.
