Does Ireland have a citizenship test? How naturalisation works
Last reviewed: October 15, 2026 · Checked against the official source linked on this page.
Adults usually apply for Irish citizenship by naturalisation after at least five years of legal residence in the last nine years, including one full year of continuous residence immediately before applying. Applicants must be of good character, intend to keep living in Ireland, and attend a citizenship ceremony where they make a declaration of fidelity to the nation and loyalty to the State. There is currently no citizenship test or language test. The Minister for Justice has discretion to grant or refuse each application. The Government has proposed new rules, including longer residence and requirements to show language ability and knowledge of Irish civics and society, but these are not yet law.
