Does Guyana have a citizenship test? How naturalisation works

Last reviewed: October 15, 2026 · Checked against the official source linked on this page.

Foreign nationals can become Guyanese by naturalisation or, in some cases such as marriage to a citizen, by registration. Applications go through the Ministry of Home Affairs to the Minister responsible for citizenship. The Ministry’s checklist asks for forms sworn before a magistrate or Justice of the Peace, four recommendations from Guyanese nationals of good standing, tax and NIS compliance statements, and a notice of your intention to apply published in two separate issues of a local newspaper. We have not found an official written citizenship knowledge test.
