Does Ecuador have a citizenship test? How naturalisation works

Last reviewed: October 15, 2026 · Checked against the official source linked on this page.

Foreign nationals become Ecuadorian through a carta de naturalización (naturalisation letter), granted at the discretion of the Executive. Under the Organic Law on Human Mobility, applicants must be over 18, have lived in Ecuador regularly and continuously for at least three years, show lawful means of support, know the national symbols and explain at an interview why they want Ecuadorian nationality. Spouses and de facto partners of Ecuadorians can apply two years after the marriage or union. We have not found an official published format for a written knowledge test.

This set is a civics practice quiz, not an official exam. It covers Ecuador’s 2008 Constitution and institutions, its path to independence, and its geography, culture and national symbols. Confirm current requirements with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility before you apply.
