Does Croatia have a citizenship test? How naturalisation works

Last reviewed: October 15, 2026 · Checked against the official source linked on this page.

Under the Croatian Citizenship Act, foreigners can usually naturalise after at least eight years of uninterrupted registered residence in Croatia, with permanent residence status. They must know the Croatian language and Latin script, be familiar with Croatian culture and social order, respect the legal order and generally give up their previous citizenship, with some exceptions such as descendants of Croatian emigrants. Applications are made in person at a police administration or police station. We have not found a published format for an official knowledge test.
