Does China have a citizenship test? How naturalisation works

Last reviewed: October 15, 2026 · Checked against the official source linked on this page.

Under China’s Nationality Law, a foreign national or stateless person who is willing to abide by China’s Constitution and laws may apply for naturalisation if they are a near relative of a Chinese national, have settled in China, or have other legitimate reasons. Applications are made to the local public security bureau (or a Chinese embassy or consulate abroad) and are approved by the Ministry of Public Security. Successful applicants must give up any foreign nationality. Naturalisation is legally possible but very rarely granted, and there is no published citizenship knowledge test.

This set is a civics practice quiz, not an official exam. It covers China’s system of government, key moments in its history, and its geography, culture and national symbols. Always confirm the current rules with the National Immigration Administration or your nearest Chinese embassy.
