Does Chile have a citizenship test? How naturalisation works
Last reviewed: October 15, 2026 · Checked against the official source linked on this page.
Foreign nationals become Chilean by obtaining a carta de nacionalización (naturalisation letter). Adults must hold permanent residence and generally have at least five years of residence in Chile, while those with close family ties to Chileans, such as spouses, can apply after two years of continuous residence. Applications are made online to the National Migration Service (SERMIG), and the letter is granted by decree of the Ministry of the Interior. SERMIG does not describe any official knowledge test as part of the process.
This set is a civics practice quiz, not an official exam. It covers Chile’s system of government, the path to independence and its geography, culture and national symbols. Processing can take a long time and rules can change, so always confirm current requirements with SERMIG.
