Does Brazil have a citizenship test? How naturalisation works

Last reviewed: October 15, 2026 · Checked against the official source linked on this page.

Foreign nationals usually become Brazilian through ordinary naturalisation, which requires at least four years of residence, the ability to communicate in Portuguese and no criminal convictions. The residence period drops to one year for people with a Brazilian child or spouse and for people from Portuguese-speaking countries, and anyone who has lived in Brazil for more than 15 uninterrupted years can apply for extraordinary naturalisation. There is no official written test on Brazilian history or civics.

This set is a civics practice quiz, not an official exam. It covers Brazil’s system of government, key moments in its history, and its geography, culture and national symbols.
