Does Belize have a citizenship test? How naturalisation works
Last reviewed: October 15, 2026 · Checked against the official source linked on this page.
Foreign nationals usually acquire Belizean nationality by registration under the Belizean Nationality Act. You can apply after holding permanent residence for at least five years (with strict limits on time spent abroad), or after one year of marriage to a Belizean. After you apply, an interview is held within about two weeks at the office where you applied, and your referees attend with you. The Nationality Department then vets the application, and approved applicants receive their certificate at a swearing-in ceremony. There is no official written citizenship knowledge test.
This is a civics practice quiz, not an official exam. It covers Belize’s parliamentary system, its history from the Maya to independence, and its geography, culture and national symbols. Always confirm current requirements and fees with the Immigration and Nationality Department.
