Foreign nationals can apply to become Bangladeshi citizens by naturalisation under the Naturalization Act, 1926, as applied by the Bangladesh Citizenship Act, 1951. The law requires applicants to have lived in Bangladesh for the twelve months before applying and for at least four years in the seven years before that, to be of good character, to have an adequate knowledge of Bengali and to intend to live in Bangladesh. Naturalisation is at the Government’s discretion and successful applicants take an oath of allegiance. There is no official written citizenship knowledge test.
