About the Austrian Citizenship Test
Last reviewed: October 15, 2026 · Checked against the official source linked on this page.
To be granted Austrian citizenship you normally need many years of lawful residence, German language skills (B1 level under current rules) and a pass in the official citizenship test (Staatsbürgerschaftsprüfung). The test checks basic knowledge of Austria’s democratic system and fundamental rights, of Austrian history, and of the history of the federal state where you live. It is held by the state government, has 18 multiple-choice questions (six per area) and lasts two hours.
This practice set covers Austria’s system of government, its history and its geography, culture and symbols. It does not include questions on individual federal states, so use your state’s official material for that part. The government has announced plans to reform citizenship rules, so always confirm the current requirements with your state government or the official citizenship website before you apply.

How to prepare
Download the official study material (Lernunterlage) from the government citizenship website and use its online practice test.
Study the history material for your own federal state, because one third of the test is about it.
Read each question carefully, since a question may have more than one correct option and a partly correct answer earns only part of a point.
Ask your state government (Landesregierung) about test dates and registration well before you plan to apply.
