Does Angola have a citizenship test? How naturalisation works

Last reviewed: October 15, 2026 · Checked against the official source linked on this page.

Naturalisation in Angola is governed by the Nationality Law of 2016 (Lei n.ΒΊ 2/16). Applicants must be adults with at least ten years of legal residence, have sufficient knowledge of Portuguese, show a genuine link to the national community and an adequate knowledge of the rights and duties under the Constitution, and have no serious criminal convictions. The implementing regulations say applicants sit oral or written exams, including on Angola’s national symbols and history, but we have not found any published details of the exam format.
