Does Algeria have a citizenship test? How naturalisation works

Last reviewed: October 15, 2026 · Checked against the official source linked on this page.

Algerian nationality is governed by the Nationality Code (Ordinance No. 70-86 of 1970, amended in 2005). To naturalise, an adult foreigner generally needs at least seven years of residence in Algeria, good conduct, the means to support themselves, sound health and proof of assimilation into the Algerian community. Naturalisation is granted by decree. We have not found any published official citizenship knowledge test, and public information on how assimilation is assessed is limited.
