What is on the CCSE exam?

The question bank is divided into five areas:

  1. Government, legislation and civic participation: the Constitution, the Crown, the Cortes Generales and the courts.
  2. Fundamental rights and duties: rights and obligations in the Constitution.
  3. Territorial organisation and geography: autonomous communities, provinces, rivers, mountains and cities.
  4. Culture and history: key historical events, artists, writers and traditions.
  5. Spanish society: everyday life, public services, holidays and procedures.

The question bank is public

The Instituto Cervantes publishes the full question bank and a preparation manual each year. Exam questions are taken from that bank, so careful practice with the current edition is the most reliable way to pass.

How to register for the CCSE

You register online with the Instituto Cervantes, choose an exam centre and date, and pay the fee. The fee covers two attempts, so if you fail the first time you can try again without paying a second time. Check the current price and rules when you register.

Do I also need the DELE A2?

Usually, yes. Most applicants must also prove Spanish at A2 level or above with the DELE exam. Nationals of countries where Spanish is an official language are generally exempt from the DELE but must still pass the CCSE. Applicants under 18 and people with a legally recognised incapacity are exempt from the CCSE.

How to prepare for the CCSE exam

  1. Download the current manual from the Instituto Cervantes, because questions change slightly each year.
  2. Take a baseline test with our CCSE practice test.
  3. Focus on geography and history, which most applicants find hardest.
  4. Drill your mistakes until you can answer the whole question bank with confidence.
  5. Take timed mock exams in the final week.

Tip: True-or-false questions often hinge on one word, such as siempre (always), nunca (never) or solo (only). Read every word before you answer.

How the 25 questions are distributed

The exam always draws its 25 questions in fixed proportions from the five areas: 10 on government, legislation and civic participation; 3 on fundamental rights and duties; 2 on territorial organisation and geography; 3 on culture and history; and 7 on Spanish society. Government and society together make up 17 of the 25, so weight your study accordingly.

Results and validity

You are told only whether you passed (apto) or not (no apto); your score is not reported. Results are published about 20 days after the exam in your candidate area on the Instituto Cervantes site and sent as a digital certificate, which is valid for four years. If you do not pass or do not attend, you can book a second sitting at the same centre within six months without paying again; after that you register anew.

Use our CCSE questions and answers to understand each area in English, then work through the official Spanish question bank so the wording is familiar on the day.
